Despite claims of a water shortage, among other issues, affecting the operation of health workers in the Region 10, the Guyana Water Incorporated [GWI] has assured that this is not the case. In fact, GWI through its Region 10 Manager, Mr. Rawle Friday, has disclosed that the water company has not been in receipt of any water
shortage complaints at its Linden office.
This publication was privy to an interview between Senior Health Visitor [ag], Karen King, and an official of the Region’s Public Relations Department, during which King shared that health centres at Christianburg and Amelia’s Ward; for instance, have been facing the water shortage challenge for over a month.
King, during that recorded interview, made it clear too that, “You cannot do much without water…we need water to wash our hands as we are also dealing with body fluids. We are dealing with babies and we need to wash our hands after each child, because we just can’t just use hand sanitizer, because not everyone is okay with that.”
Even in the face of the reported water issue, King had informed that since the unavailability of potable water is paramount among the concerns facing particularly Community Health Workers [CHW] in the Region, efforts were being made to address the concerns urgently.
But Friday insisted yesterday, “We have not received any complaints from any one of the health facilities, especially those mentioned in the article…”
The Regional Manager explained further that GWI personnel make regular checks at health facilities in Region 10, and checks yesterday at the Amelia’s Ward, Christianburg and other health facilities in Linden, showed that all are receiving an adequate supply of water.
“The regional team of GWI in Region 10 sees as very important, the supply of water to all health centres. As such, there is the provision of our direct line, myself as the Regional Manager and also the engineer. So should there be any issues in relation to water supply at any one of the health facilities, they can contact us directly at any time,” he asserted.
According to Friday, “GWI is committed to providing an adequate supply of potable water to all citizens and encourages customers with concerns to contact its Customer Call Centre on 227-8701-03/04. Additionally, the Linden office can be contacted on 444-2551.”
