Why the mad rush to elections? Yes, the constitution is important, but the safety and security of our people is paramount, and a hurried, flawed election based on a questionable voters’ list serves no one’s interests.
Given the stakes, this election needs to be beyond dispute, and GECOM should be applauded and supported for its methodical, calm approach thus far, amid the hysteria.
The diplomatic community should also appreciate and be sensitive to the importance of getting elections right in a multi-racial society.
At the same time, one must ask why the PPP/C is objecting to a new voters’ list. After all, back in 2014 they were already expressing “grave concern” over indications that the Provisional List of Electors might be padded, and called on GECOM to explain “the drastic increase in new registrants (over 78,000) when the average annual increase of New Registrants is usually just over 11,000.” (SN August 19, 2014)
And after the 2015 elections, the party had called for house-to-house registration, but says it had been ignored. Now they don’t care.
Yours sincerely
Albert Russell
