A labourer was yesterday sent to prison on a charge of simple larceny. Jose Hamilton admitted to the charge after it was ready to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It was alleged that between February 1, 2019 and February 2, 2019 at Garnett Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, Hamilton stole a quantity of children’s clothing, a quantity of ladies hair, and eight adult pants.
Hamilton informed the court that he is 40 years old and that he resides at ‘M’ 41 North Sophia.
On February 1, 2019 about 18:00hrs the victim secured his boutique, leaving the articles mentioned in the charge inside the building. He returned on February 2, 2019 about 10:00hrs.
The victim then observed a window which was forcefully opened and became suspicious. He conducted a search and found the articles missing. He reported the incident and an investigation was conducted.
The business entity which is secured by Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage was viewed by police ranks along with the victim for the period the incident allegedly transpired.
The footage revealed that Hamilton removed the articles from inside of the boutique. Hamilton was subsequently arrested, and questioned where he admitted to committing the crime.
The defendant told police ranks that he sold the articles to a man. However, no name was given for the individual. Also, Hamilton took the ranks to a location however; no contact was made with the individual he claimed to have sold the items to.
It was also noted that none of the articles were recovered.
Police prosecutor Neville Jeffers informed the court that Hamilton was previously charged for a similar offence and was sentenced to four weeks in prison some time in 2018.
When asked if he has anything to say to the court before sentence was passed, Hamilton stated, “I went and I see the stuff so I pick it up to go and sell.”
Chief Magistrate McLennan then sentenced the accused to 18 months in prison. She also advised him, “I hope that when you are in prison you will receive counseling so that when you come out you will not want to steal other people properties.”
