I am writing this letter out of great concern and frustration.
Touts pretending to be lawyers and JPs are invading Maraj Building, a three storey building containing about eighty offices including ‘Legal Aid Clinic, at Charlotte and King Streets, Georgetown.
The English dictionary says, ‘when one pretends to be what they are not,’ that person is classified as ‘a hypocrite’.
These touts are like vultures, they prey on people entering the building.
There is an individual who has precedents of documents stored in his computer. He employed three touts to solicit people intended to do paper work who will lure them into his store as he pretends as if he is the legal authority to prepare legal documents.
A hairdresser is also doing the same, and they conveniently make a business stamp to authorize passport forms.
There are about one dozen touts at the entrance on the building, and as you enter, there are more at the steps. These touts will convince you that they are the legal authority to prepare legal documents; many people fall prey to them and end up-getting documents that are not properly prepared.
Many times, these touts end up in the hands of the police for fleecing people of their money and not delivering the services.
If a client comes to a particular lawyer or JP, these touts with tell them that, ‘he or she is not in’, ‘he or she is out of the country, ‘he or she will charge too expensive’ and in some cases, ‘he or she is dead.’
We, the JPs and lawyers, who are legal tenants renting offices in the building, have to bear with all of this. Our clients are being harassed as they enter the Maraj building .
These touts dressed in a manner that will make you will believe that they are indeed lawyers and/or JPs, and they are so desperate that they will do what it takes to get your money. They behave worse than the minibus touts.
It must be noted that there are a few Region 3 JPs who operate in this building, which is situated in Region 4 (that is illegal), and these are the JPs who stamp and sign documents prepared by touts.
Yours truly,
Parmanand Sukhu J.P.
Commissioner of Oaths.
