The reigning champions Showstoppers set up a mouthwatering quarter-final engagement against West Side Ballers when action in this year’s West Demerara / East Bank Zone of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Competition resumes on Wednesday, at the Pouderoyen Market Tarmac.
The three-time reigning title holders ended the round robin campaign unbeaten and in the process have looked in ominous form in their quest to successfully defend their crown.
Playing in the final game of the night on Friday, Showstoppers easily disposed of Boom Bang 3-0 with leading marksmen Marvin Josiah, who netted a Guinness Goal (any goal that is scored in the final five minutes of play counts as two) and Stephon Jupiter, being the players on target.
However, their opponent, West Side Ballers, the only other team to win the competition which featured since the inaugural year, are no pushovers and could be harbouring ambitions to register an upset.
Ballers looked impressive as well during their 4-0 demolition of Phoenix ballers in their final group game with Kevin Frank and Morgan Denny firing in Guinness Goals.
Another team that has tongues wagging is ESPN and many believe that after some consistent showing since their first match in the tournament this season and this year could be their year.
They drew 1-1 in regulation time against Genna, but survived 2-1 in a penalty shootout to confirm a date with Ballers Empire.
Up Top Bosses are a dark horse to go all the way and the pundits have touted them to progress further into the competition. They won by walkover from Up-Like-7 and will face the stubborn Jetty in the last eight.
Bagotstown Warriors and Brothers United complete the line up for Wednesday’s quarterfinals after securing walkovers from Agricola and Dream Team, respectively.
Meanwhile, the teams that failed to turn up for their respective matches will face disciplinary action from the Organisers.
It was reported that they may be banned from entering future tournaments due to their action.
