The awards ceremony for top performers of the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) in 2018 was held on Friday evening at the Georgetown Club on Camp Street. At the event which was attending by President
of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), K.A. Juma-Yassin, Anthony Downes won his seventh senior Male player of the year award, while Cristy Campbelle won for females.
On the juniors’ front, Heimraj Resaul was the top male for the third time, while Kalyca Fraser copped the top award for the first time.
During her address, the eloquent Campbelle expressed gratitude to everyone that helped made her year successful, “Foremost, I thank God for a healthy and successful 2018 for all of the players. To our sponsors, the entire tennis fraternity is grateful for your continued support and timely interventions. Mom, there aren’t words to express how appreciative I am for
not only your presence tonight, but throughout every aspect of my life. To my coach Dexter and all players not confined to my club, I can assure you that I try to incorporate every bit of advice not only to tennis but generally to be a better person. Thanks also to my trainer Paul, Asad, Linden and Dr. Van West Charles for pushing me above and beyond my comfort zone daily. In conclusion, it would be remiss of me to not acknowledge my friend Nigel for introducing me to this glorious sport of tennis.”
Downes who was a bit under the weather spoke briefly, “Thanks to the GTA for support, my family and all who help me along the way.”
“Thanks to my coach, parents, friends and sponsors for believing in me along with my mother especially who’s up and down with me daily to ensure I’m at school and training. I couldn’t ask for a better tennis year and a more supportive team. I look forward to a better 2019 season and I’m confident I’ll continue to do great things,” Junior Champion, Heimraj, shared during his address.
Meanwhile, in her first address as champion, Fraser expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support and her delight in receiving the award.
During his address, GOA boss Juman-Yassin, stressed the importance of adhering to anti-doping protocol. He revealed that local federations/associations have been slack in staying up to date with the exception of the Badminton association. He explained that each athlete should complete the doping test once every three months. (Calvin Chapman)
