It seems that winning elections and gaining power is the only interest of the leaders of the PPP, but it appears that they do not understand that it is likely that they would not gain a plurality or a majority of the votes due to public sentiments.
The PPP combination of old–fangled strategies of obstructionism, misguided bluster, propaganda, dishonesty, political deflection, spitefulness and scorched-earth politics could indeed cost them the elections.
There is undeniable evidence that the opposition leader Bharat Jagdeo and others at Freedom House have become fixated on rulership for their own interest and not those of the people. In fact, they have been known not to put the country and the citizenry first.
On December 21, 2018, the nation was presented with evidence of the PPP obsession with power when the no-confidence motion was passed in Parliament. The PPP leader’s brand of politics in these enlightened could further erode its image as a party.
The PPP, especially its leader, Bharat Jagdeo seems to have a major credibility problem with many of his own executives over the proceedings with the election of its presidential candidate, which was anything but free or fair.
It had all the markings of Jagdeo’s heavy-handed style of leadership. As a result, a growing roster of rank and file members has not only condemned the election process but they have also viewed it as not respecting the minimal democratic principles and standards. Many have threatened to stay away from the polls on Election Day.
Despite incontestable evidence that elections cannot be held in 90 days as pronounced by the Constitution due to the fact that Guyana Election Commission (GECOM) not being ready, the opposition leader has accused the government of refusing to abide by the constitution.
He has castigated President Granger who has reaffirmed the government‘s commitment to abide and respect by the constitution. Irrespective of race or party affiliation, every right-thinking Guyanese should rebuke the opposition leader.
No one, except those in the PPP should be happy with the manner in which the opposition leader continues to chastise the President who is fighting a deadly disease. For the PPP, gaining power is far more important than humanity.
Many supporters of the PPP believe that the memory of the party founding Leader, Dr. Cheddi Jagan whom they claimed was a good and decent man, is being trampled upon by Mr. Jagdeo whose hunger for power has taken precedence over the development of the country and the lives of the masses.
Many have opined that Presidential Candidate Irfaan Ali’s declaration that he would create 50,000 jobs, if elected the President of Guyana is nothing but hogwash.
One of the most famous sayings attributed to Abraham Lincoln is about political deception…He said: “You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.”
While in power, the PPP was evidently against everything that would have advanced the interests of the people. It did not fulfill many of its promises, gave scanty increases to old-age pensioners and civil/public servants, ostracized a certain section of the population and used state funds to enrich themselves, relatives and friends of the party.
Yet some elements in the PPP, including trade union leaders whose umbilical cords are planted at Freedom House, have belittled business about low wages and comparing them to slavery, which means that they have ignored their obligations to civil/public servants. It is deceptive politics being practised.
