As expected, Michael Singh, who had indicated before that he wasn’t interested in taking the helm, was elected as President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) when the body held its annual general meeting (AGM) and executive committee elections, yesterday at the Roraima Duke Lodge.
“It wasn’t my wish to have another four years in Basketball Administration, it is a very tough job but somebody has to do it,” those were some of Singh’s remarks following the unop

posed elections.
In fact, Singh’s slate was the only one submitted to contest the elections due to the laborious nature of the job.
The new executive committee of the GABF reads, Michael Singh – President, Kenrick Thomas; Vice President (VP) of Operations and Development, Lawrence Simon; VP of Compliance and Discipline, Alex Graham; VP of Marketing and Public Relations, Patrick Haynes; General Secretary, Gavin Singh; Treasurer and Joe Chapman; Assistant Treasurer along with Junior Hercules as the Technical Coordinator.
The new GABF boss paid special tribute to the outgoing head, Nigel Hinds, for his hard and dedicated work during the last tenure, noting that Hinds really set the bar high and it will be difficult to fill his shoes.
Singh revealed that sometime during the year that he plans on host a President’s Cup basketball tournament in recognition of all former local basketball administrators who have played integral roles in bringing the sport to where it is currently.
However, first on the new executive’s agenda is to meet with corporate Guyana as they prepare the national men’s team for their participation in next month’s FIBA Americas qualifier in Colombia.
Although, support from the business community and state will be needed, Singh noted that, “I am confident that we will be able to wing out our team to the qualifiers hiccup free.” The budget for the trip he revealed is around $7million.
Meanwhile, head coach of the national men’s team revealed that with the exception of the injured Ray Victor and Travis Burnett who has migrated along with Devon Devonish and the indisciplined Felix Hamilton, all players from Guyana’s Caribbean Championship winning team are invited to tryouts, which will be held shortly.
