The future is looking especially bright for Region Ten especially when it comes to the agriculture sector. At least this is according to Chairman of the Regional Democratic Council [RDC], Mr. Renis Morian, as he announced ambitious plans for the Region this year.
His disclosure followed a meeting with the Region’s Chairman of the Agriculture Committee during which discussions were had on a number of initiatives, projects and programmes, which are expected to help boost the agriculture sector significantly.
The Region was not so long ago able to achieve its first established agriculture co-operative society – Madena Co-op Society Limited. This has been operating on a 500,000 plus acres of land.
According to Morian, the Region has held discussions with the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority [NDIA] to assist with some drainage related issues to which an affirmative response has been forthcoming.
“We have a project document that we are about to complete. It will be sent to the Minister of Agriculture for some support in this area, and we are working to complete this document so that we can get going,” Morian said.
Taking into account that the Co-op Society is already operational, the Regional Chairman disclosed that efforts are being made to have some 300 limes, 300 grafted oranges and 300 sour-sop plants planted permanently in the first quarter of this year.
He said that this will be planted along with regular cash crop plants on the 500,000 acres of farm land that has been secured.
To further boost the knowledge and skills of those working along with the Co-op Society, an exploratory visit has been planned with a view to examining and or modelling farms with a view of fostering the continued development of agriculture in the Region.
An initial exploratory visit had caused officials to visit the work of some farmers, an undertaking, which was thwarted by persistent rainfalls. Morian said that efforts will be made to revisit the farmers to examine their drainage capabilities.
He went on to point out that because of the agricultural works being done at another farm, road expansion works have begun. “We are using our own equipment plus with the support from residents, we are able to widen the road as we seek to create a farm to market road,” Morian shared.
One of the primary plans, according to Morian, is pushing agriculture in schools to establish shade houses. This is a deliberate move, he noted, since the Region is on a mission to have shade houses at the various secondary schools.
Already some of the schools with shade rooms are the Linden Multilateral, New Silver City Secondary, Linden Foundation and Wisburg Secondary.
According to the Regional Chairman, too, his administration is looking at a regional model experimental farm, noting that it would be executed in one of the schools’ compounds but managed by the region.
“It’s an experimental project, so shortly we will be going out and looking at several schools, their security, among other things, so as to decide which school this project would be best suited for in terms of land availability,” he said.
He, however, noted that the project will also have some amount of involvement and participation by the students, stressing that agriculture will continue to play a major role in the development of Guyana since the Region has the finances to spearhead such initiatives.
“My focus, this year, is to concentrate on investment in agriculture.
“I must say that there are several investors who are waiting because they have several issues so we are hoping to build up a better relationship with Lands and Surveys so that these things can be processed more quickly.
“We also want to have a better working relationship with National Drainage and Irrigation because as you know they play a very integral part in terms of drainage and now they are tasked with doing drainage all over the country which is good for us,” Morian said.
As the Region moves to fast-track its agriculture plans, the Regional Chairman divulged plans to visit the Minister of Agriculture before the end of this month.
“We want to outline to him what we have planned and that we are seeking his support,” said Morian as he revealed that the region has commenced plans for a second hosting of a Food and Agricultural Exhibition, which is slated for September.
