In 2015, the PPP/C lost the general elections for the first time in over 25 years as a result of a growing public perception of the PPP/C being corrupt, dishonest and nepotistic.
Rather than return to the grassroots framework founded by the late great Dr. Cheddi Jagan, epitomized by honesty and hard work, the PPP/C has done nothing to quell the aforementioned public perception.
By selecting (through undemocratic communist central committee procedures), Mr. Irfaan Ali as the next PPP/C presidential candidate, the PPP/C has only perpetuated, not detracted from the view that the PPP/C is a corrupt political party.
Mr. Irfaan Ali’s reputation is far from unblemished and while I will not get into whether or not Mr. Ali is or was a corrupt, dishonest government official, the fact is that Mr. Ali has been the subject of numerous allegations while serving as the Minister of Housing.
The PPP/C has thus selected a candidate that has been embroiled in the public’s apprehension of corruption and dishonesty. In so doing, the PPP/C has done nothing to change its image in contemplation of the upcoming snap elections and this is something that should be of exceptional concern to Guyanese in general, but also, to the world at large.
