The Hinterland Electrification Company Inc. (HECI), an organisation formed under the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, is looking into developing wind farms at Onverwagt, Berbice, with the installment of the first wind-resource measuring station. The endeavour is part of the Ministry’s effort to develop sustainable alternative forms of energy generation, with specific priority for urban, remote and off-grid
areas.
The installment of the 60-metre wind measuring station will aid in the accumulation of pertinent data to be used by project investors for the development of specialised wind farms along Guyana’s coast.
The tower consists of three wind-speed sensors at 61m, 45m and 30m, wind direction sensors at 58m and 30.3m. It also has a sensor for temperature & relati
ve humidity at 20m, and air pressure sensor at 3m.
It is the Ministry of Public Infrastructure’s aim for the towers to assist experts to receive one to two years of high-quality data from tall met-masts (60-80 metres in height).
The project, which is being jointly executed by the Government of Guyana, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and Global Environmental Facility (GEF), will see three more towers erected over the course of the next six months, according to a release from the Public Infrastructure Ministry.
The Ministry’s statement noted that high quality wind measurement is an essential ingredient for wind project developers to prepare a bankable feasibility report which can then lead to financing of wind farm projects.
The general objectives for the HECI are to increase energy access in Guyana, reduce long-term operational costs (primarily fuel costs) of on-grid generation, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the electricity sector.
