Ramotar had a duty to disclose legal opinion on what makes a ‘majority’
DEAR EDITOR,
I believe that President Ramotar had a duty in 2014 to disclose to the Guyanese people that there was a legal opinion on what makes a ‘majority’ of ALL the members of the National Assembly for passing a motion of no confidence in the government.
That opinion – that states that 34 votes were needed and not 33 – was the property of the State and Mr. Ramotar could not discard it as “foolish. What was foolish was to prorogue parliament for 6 months, then dissolve it, in order to run from the motion.
But he ran from the frying pan right into the fire when the PPP was defeated at the 2015 elections. It went from a majority lame duck minority government into the opposition.
Had he established that 34 votes were needed, he would have remained in government and, today, Guyana would not be facing a political crisis.
I find his position to be imprudent.
