The PNC’s fuzzy mathematics after the new National Hero Charrandas Persaud’s deciding vote of no confidence against the government, confirms the PNC’s historic practices as a rigging party. Founder Rigger Forbes Burnham, Granger’s hero, taught his party well that they have to use any means necessary to stay in power. The PNC’s motto is once in power, stay in power. It was the PNC’s fuzzy math that led to the PNC securing (fabricating) a majority in parliament in 1968, an eventual two-thirds majority at one election, and holding majorities until its defeat when free elections were brokered by US President Carter in 1992. In the referendum of 1978, the PNC’s fuzzy, magical math even produced a 95% win. Rigging is in the PNC’s DNA. You can’t get it out.
In the dark days of PNC Part 1, they were the “wrong and strong” party. They beat up PPP and other opposition people and stole the ballot boxes and took them to military headquarters. Votes were not counted at the place of poll. Only the PNC knew how to count votes; other people’s counts were not needed. Once the ballot boxes were in military custody and PNC people were the counters, and in charge of the elections machinery, the PNC always “won.”
By 1992 when the PNC was booted from office, Guyanese were using the Chronicle newspaper as toilet paper, law enforcement routinely seized and trampled on bread in the streets, and Guyanese were denied flour, peas, oil, milk, and other accustomed foods.
Now, the PNC is back to its rigging ways again by saying 33 is not greater than 32. A party that used 33-32 to get into power and win every vote in the National Assembly since 2015, now tells us that 33-32 cannot work for the no-confidence vote. All the shenanigans they are carrying on with now, is another form of PNC rigging the votes to suit their purposes. It only makes these losers look like really sorry losers, as the no confidence vote brings an end to their good life.
The PNC is confirming a widely-held view that once the PNC got back into power, it will not give up power easily, that they will resort to their bullying, rigging ways to stay in power.
The placement of military people in some key positions, and the painting of government buildings, buses, boats and bicycles in PNC green and AFC yellow, were all part of a new paramountcy of the party, sealed with the party leader’s speech that she has only PNC friends and will give jobs only to PNC people. In three and a half years, the PNC managed to reinstitutionalize its old dictatorship ways of “Paramountcy of the Party.”
The PNC is proving that they cannot be trusted with power by themselves or as part of a coalition. It has come full circle in destroying coalition politics. While the PPP cut short its term gracefully under President Janet Jagan and President Donald Ramotar, the PNC shamelessly clings on to power, using ridiculous time-buying gimmicks. And the PPP remains patient and peaceful. But as Walter Rodney said, “This act in itself will not delay their day of judgment.” Mr. Jagdeo’s party has battered the PNC at the 2016 LGE, walloped them in 2018, and the no confidence vote has the PNC disoriented.
Those independents who were willing to go with the PNC and give it a chance against the PPP are now disappointed and will abandon the PNC for its current antics on the no-confidence vote. The PNC surely makes the PPP look like the lesser evil.
Sincerely,
Jerry Singh
