The Working People’s Alliance has asked that the government and the opposition work toward ensuring that the current debate over the no-confidence vote is swift and peaceful.
Though the party has not taken the liberty of opining on the validity of the motion, it noted, in a statement, that it is “cognizant of the political consequences of the challenge,” and is paying keen attention to all of the arguments concerning the legality/illegality of the vote.
What is important to note is that the party said that the challenge mounted by the government could be read as though the government is attempting to remain in power beyond the provision of Article 106(7), which requires the government to resign within 90 days of the successful passing of a no-confidence motion.
It is this contention that was raised by the Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo, since the government had not touted 34 votes as what was needed, before December 21, and since the statuses of many Members of Parliament (MP) as dual citizens has been public knowledge for years.
The release by the WPA states that the current controversy is yet another test of the political maturity of the leaders of the Guyanese government and opposition. In this regard, the party cautions that, no matter the result, the resolution should not cause any major political fallout fueled by narrow partisan interests.
True to the wishes of the WPA, the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) and the coalition, A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC), yesterday, agreed to a pledge, to respect the outcome.
The WPA took note of President Granger’s statement that “all Constitutional requirements will be met,” as well as his assurance to the Guyanese people that “this is not a crisis which could dissolve into any type of confrontation,” and lauded the importance of these statements in what the WPA calls an “uncertain period”.
The Party called for peace and maturity at this time because “too much is at stake”.
