Yesterday, the mother of 26-year-old Joel Leitch fainted in court as he was made to answer to a charge of robbery under arms. Leitch was appearing before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Before the hearing began, Leitch’s mother could have been heard crying as her son was seated in the prisoners’ dock. She was asked to exit the courtroom as a result, but she fainted as she was leaving, and had to be assisted by an officer after she was revived.
Meanwhile, Leitch denied the allegation, which stated that while in the company of another individual on January 4, 2019, at Trench Road, Mandela Avenue, armed with a gun, he robbed Ravon Thorman of one gold chain valued at $75,000.
Leitch’s attorney, in an application for bail, informed the court that his client resides at Lot 51 Durban Street, Lodge, and sells clothing as his source of income. The attorney stated that Leitch has no matters pending in court; neither does he have any convictions.
He went on to say that the defendant is not a flight risk and is prepared to adhere to every condition that is made out by the court. According to the attorney, there was no identification parade; however, his client was picked up from his home in the afternoon and had now been brought before the court.
Police prosecutor Adunni Inniss had no objections to bail being granted to Leitch, but asked that conditions be attached.
The facts of the charge are that on the day in question, Thorman was in company of two others when two males rolled up on a motorcycle with their faces covered with bandanas. One came off the bike and pointed a firearm at him.
The man began to demand that Thorman empty his pockets; however, he then snatched the chain from the victim and rode off.
The prosecutor admitted that there was no identification parade done, but the accused was arrested based on information received during the investigation.
After listening to both sides, Magistrate Marcus granted bail to Leitch for the same value of the chain, under the conditions that he report to the East La Penitence Police Station once per fortnight – on Fridays – until the completion of the matter.
Also, Leitch is to not come within fifty feet of the alleged victim or his place of residence. The matter was adjourned until January 21, 2019.
