A 26-year-old Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder man was yesterday remanded to prison for the murder of a Guyana Defence Force Lieutenant. The defendant, Komal Matthews called “Son”, appeared
at the Whim Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Renita Singh.
It is alleged that Matthews, between the 30th and the 31st December, 2018, murdered Mark Bagot at Phillipi Farm, Corentyne, Berbice. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was represented by Attorney-at-law Chandra Sohan.
He was remanded to prison and is set to return to court on January 21, 2019.
Meanwhile, as a shackled Matthews made his way down the court steps, the dead man’s relatives, inclusive of Bagot’s father, were very emotional upon seeing the accused. They began to hurl remarks out of anger at Matthews as he was whisked away by the police. One relative broke down in tears and had to be taken away from the court yard.
Initial reports had detailed that Bagot was in the company of a cousin at a liquor shop in Phillipi Farm, Corentyne, Berbice, when an individual who was known to Bagot, walked in. At that point, Bagot requested a round of beers and the other person agre
ed and indicated that he would be paying, but after Bagot requested another round of beers, the issue began. Bagot had reportedly insisted that the other man also have another beer with them, but the man refused and there was an exchange of words.
The back and forth between the two escalated and empty beer bottles were hurled across the shop at each other. At some point, the man whipped out a knife and stabbed Bagot once. The soldier, who also had a stool in his hand, dropped the stool and collapsed. His cousin rushed to his assistance while the other man escaped. Bagot was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital and was shortly after referred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injury.
A post mortem examination that was conducted on Bagot’s body, revealed that he died from perforation of the lung due to a single stab wound.
The suspect had turned himself over to police in the company of his Attorney just a few days after the incident.
