He was recently placed on a ban to keep the peace after assaulting his wife.
Instead, Samuel Dyal, called “Rasta” defied that order and floored the woman in church. He must now serve 12 months on three charges.
Dyal, a 32-year-old labourer of Letter Kenny, Corentyne, Berbice, committed the acts against his wife, Nikita Dyal, on December 19 at her parents’ home. He did so again on December 30, 2018 at the Letter Kenny Full Gospel Church, Corentyne.
The other act was committed against his mother-in-law.
He appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh in the Whim Magistrates Court. The state’s case as presented by Prosecutor Inspector Althea Solomon is that the woman had moved out of the home she shared with the accused and had returned to her parents’ residence after being consistently abused by him.
On December 19, last, the man ventured to his in-laws’ home. His mother-in-law locked the gate and was ‘bracing’ it from the inside when Dyal proceeded to push at the gate. In the process, the woman fell. He assaulted her before he proceeded inside and assaulted his wife.
The matter was reported and he was arrested and charged. He was placed on a bond and told to keep 100 feet from the woman, pending the outcome of the matters.
At about 08:00 hrs on Sunday December 30, the woman was among worshippers in church when Dyal approached her and floored her with a cuff to her face. He accused her of neglecting the family.
He was arrested and charged with assault causing actual bodily harm.
Dyal was sentenced to nine months in jail. He was also sentenced to two months in jail for assaulting her on December 19 and one month for assaulting his mother-in-law, Basmattie, on the said day.
The sentences are to run consecutively.
