Whether there are elections in Guyana early in 2019 or in 2020, the Guyanese people are faced with little to choose between the two major parties.
The President and Prime Minister, having given their word, seem now to have decided that their word is definitely not their bond. The presidential hopefuls of the major opposition party have sworn fealty to an ex-President not known for being absolutely straightforward with the people of Guyana. This should not surprise anyone acquainted with Guyanese political history.
The two main parties in Guyana are Siamese twins separated a few years after birth. They both believe in powerful leaders; they both treat their opponents as enemies (the present constitution originally referred to the opposition as the “minority”); they both use fear at election time to get people to vote for them; they both claim to speak for the people but show little respect for them when in power; neither has been prepared to amend drastically a constitution that gives the President inordinate powers; they both want oil riches while neither would be trusted with more than five Guyana dollars by most people in the country, much less many millions.
The electorate should find other political parties to vote for, starting with the one representing the original inhabitants of Guyana, a people who have suffered more than any other.
Yours faithfully,
Peter D Fraser
