In recent days, the media—both social and mainstream—focused a great deal on the political climate following the passage of the No-Confidence Motion against the coalition government.
Initially after the motion was passed, several government officials, including President David Granger and Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, accepted the outcome of the vote on the motion and said that the government will abide by the Constitution.
However, the government subsequently said that it is exploring its options. That position was given days ago via a press statement and remains the official stance of the government.
Yesterday, Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo, said that the government can only be buying time because truly, it only has one viable option.
Jagdeo said, “I do not know what options they are exploring because there is only one option available and that is explicitly outlined in the Constitution of Guyana that upon the passage of a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly, the Cabinet, including the President, shall resign. We know that the Motion has been passed because the Speaker has declared so and it has been certified by the Clerk.”
Jagdeo continued, “So, What other option can they be exploring? And, what is Cabinet exploring? The Cabinet should have resigned already.”
Jagdeo said that he is still waiting for the government to set a date for him to meet with them.
He said that, days ago, the government had told him that a meeting will be organized between Jagdeo and President Granger.
Jagdeo said that no date has been given for this meeting with the President.
