The 65 members of the Parliament of Guyana, following all correct protocols and procedures, debated a NO CONFIDENCE MOTION submitted by the opposition; and when the vote was taken, 33 members voted YES to the motion and 32 voted NO.
The Speaker of Parliament confirmed and recorded the results of the vote. The Prime Minister of Guyana, spoke after the Speaker and he confirmed and accepted the results of the vote. The next day, the President is reported to have confirmed and accepted the results of the vote and accordingly agreed to invite the Leader of the Opposition to talks at his earliest convenience.
In spite of all of the above, there is actually a subcommittee of five grown and highly qualified men who are meeting to decide if 33 is greater than 32.
Let me get straight to the ending page of this stupidity; any attempt to use any convoluted argument to claim that in this case of voting, 33 is not greater than 32 will bring disaster to Guyana. If you think we got problems now; you ain’t seen nothing yet. Such ‘stupidness’ will plant the tree of discord, discontent, and confrontation immediately and for generations to come and may even be the cause of civil unrest.
Guyana will become ungovernable. And while the Guyanese are fighting among themselves, thieves will come in and remove our crown jewels.
Elections in 90 days is not the answer to Guyana problems right now. Regardless of how well the elections will be managed, we will end up with one group in and one group still out. If the PPP gets in then the immediate focus will be on changing the administration. And all this will distract from the real and substantial work that needs to be done to get the country ready for first oil.
This coalition government has limited itself to a particular group that is not necessarily fully capable of handling the challenges of first oil. It also refuses to employ the best talent from around the world, even though they should know that such talent will save more than they will cost. Given the stated position of the leader of the PNC, Minister of Health, Volda Lawrence, this is unlikely to change.
These extraordinary circumstances are presenting the political directorate of this country, the greatest opportunity to come together and work in the best interest of Guyana. The President and the Leader of the Opposition should immediately embark on discussions to form a national front/shared government.
Both of them should agree on what are the challenges for first oil. They should divide up these challenges between them. Then agree to Shared Governance to achieve these objectives.
This experience should inform as to whether they can continue the Shared Governance Experiment or go to elections in 2020 as separate political entities.
Let us hope that these two people can rise to the challenge that this opportunity presents. History will judge them should they fail the nation.
