The Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) has managed to successfully run off a number of tournaments on 2018 and is looking forward to go a step further in the coming year.
The GCA would like to express gratitude to its sponsors who made these competitions possible namely GISE, Star Party Rentals, Trophy Stall of Bourda Market, Ansa Mc Cal/Carib Beer, New Building Society, Noble House Sea Foods, Toucan Industries, Guyana Diabetic Association, V-Net Communications, GCA Tri State USA (Linden Fraser) and GCA Friends of Cricket.
The GCA Competitions Committee must also be commended for their hard work which made the eight competitions for the year possible. The committee chairman Shaun Massiah has extended gratitude to the affiliated clubs and associates, the executives of each club, media, players, Umpires Council, Curators and supporters.
“This lovely game of cricket cannot be played on a regular basis without their input and we have seen several players who have performed in our GCA competitions gone on by leaps and bounds to the highest level of cricket. Some of these players started from our peewee league and under 15 competitions. It was a challenged to get these competitions completed because of the unavailability of grounds. Nevertheless this year was better compared to previous year in terms of ground availability.”
The competitions that were completed are; Carib Beer first division which was won by DCC, while GCC finished as the runner up. GISE, Star Party Rentals first division with DCC emerging as the winner; Police placed second. NBS second division 40-over which was taken by DCC – GCC placed second, Noble House Sea Foods second division which was won by GCC; Police took the runner up spot, Toucan U15 – DCC emerged as the champion team, while Transport SC finished second, GDA U17 – DCC and Transport SC took the first and second places respectively, GCA/Tri State U19 – DCC took the title while Malteenoes SC finished in second place and V Net U13 which won taken by Transport SC; DCC took the runner up spot. Massiah added, “In looking into the new year 2019/2020 and onwards I would like to suggest the following.”
“That all the club executives or Presidents conduct regular meetings and write to the Minister of Finance and Culture Youth and Sports asking for a waiver of their electricity and water bills, remembering that all sports clubs are non profit making organisations. Seek their help in employing curators/grounds men whereas they can be added to their payroll. This can also be done for Coaches in the Schools and to rendered their assistance in acquiring much need machinery for their club such as Motorized Roller, Grass Cutter, rubberized covers and other equipment which can assist the ground staff. Suggest to the Ministry to include in their budget subventions for clubs to the tune of $1,000,000 per year since many clubs are struggling to keep afloat with the heavy bills, lunches, cricket balls, salaries and ground maintenance.”
“We have sand in galore; several grounds need upgrading, one such is the Transport and General Sports Club Ground on Thomas Road, Thomas Lands. This ground has been unused for approximately 13 years while the drainage around DCC, Transport, Malteenoes SC and GCC needs cleaning. Grounds in the East Ruimveldt, Hadfield Street, South Ruimveldt, Sophia and the University of Guyana desperately need to be upgraded so cricket can be played through out Georgetown on a regular basis; these non functional grounds are hampering youths from being meaningfully occupied.”
Massiah stated that 2018/2019 NBS 2nd division 40-over is in progress with the semi finals and final set to be played under lights at DCC while an U19 competition will be contested on or just after the resumption of season.
“We will also be hosting a1st division 2 days, 1st division 50 overs and a T/20 competition, our youth Festival of cricket: Under 13, 15, 17, and another under 19 competition with our partners from the USA Linden Fraser and Tri State as well as a second division 2 days and a T/20 Competition. There will also be club outreach/clinic, seminars and emphasis will be placed on female cricket.”
Competitions are set to resume on January 12.
