A vendor who operates at stall at Bourda Market, is the fourth person charged with the murder of popular Bourda cheese vendor, Troy Ramalho, who was killed four months ago while plying his trade.
Twenty-year-old Niya John, of 51 D’Urban Street, was yesterday arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on August 15, last, John murdered Troy Ramalho during the course of a robbery. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge after it was read to him by the Magistrate.
His lawyer, George Thomas, told the court that his client has an alibi to support his whereabouts on the night Ramalho was murdered.
The matter was prosecuted by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield who asked the court for three weeks to complete the prosecution file.
The Magistrate, after listening to the prosecutor, remanded John to prison until January 18, 2019.
Three men are already before the courts facing the same murder charge.
Akeem Morris, 26, a miner, of 40 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty; George Paton, 34, a taxi driver, of 177 BB Eccles, East Bank Demerara, and Royce Sandiford, 33, of Sophia, were not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that while being in company of each other on August 15, last, they murdered Troy Ramalho during the course of a robbery.
The Preliminary Inquiry into the matter is being conducted by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
According to information, on the day in question, Ramalho was shot and killed while plying his trade at Bourda Market, where he sold cheese and eggs. It was reported that two bandits, one of whom was armed with a gun, pounced upon Ramalho.
The court heard that the jewellery that Ramalho was wearing on the night he was shot is missing.
According to information, Ramalho was sitting on a bench at his business place, and had just finished selling a customer when the men walked up to him and shot him.
Ramalho fell to the ground and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
