The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who has been fingered in a bungled cocaine transaction is reportedly refusing to cooperate with investigators, who have questioned his claims about being a robbery victim.
According to sources, the ASP was questioned at CID Headquarters but refused to provide a statement to the ranks questioning him. He remains under open arrest at the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) Headquarters. Ranks from the Major Crimes Unit are spearheading the investigation.
A police sergeant, who allegedly destroyed a statement that implicated the ASP, is also under open arrest at the TSU Headquarters. Kaieteur News understands that a lance corporal who also allegedly tried to conceal evidence has been transferred to the Police Mounted Branch.
Crime Chief Lyndon Alves had told Kaieteur News that investigators were questioning the ASP about his claims about being robbed.
Also still in custody are two Linden-based gunmen who had allegedly robbed the ASP of some $6M and his firearm during the botched drug deal.
One of the detained men told investigators that he and his accomplice had robbed the ASP of his firearm and $6M when he approached them to buy two kilogrammes of cocaine.
The incident occurred two Mondays ago at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara. At the time, the men were reportedly unaware that the buyer was a policeman.
However, the rank allegedly managed to hold onto the other individual, and subdue him with help from persons nearby.
It is alleged that the individuals involved in the deal later realised that the victim was a policeman. They reportedly then made arrangements for the firearm to be returned.
The ASP had claimed that he was robbed of his licensed 9mm pistol and jewellery two Mondays ago in the vicinity of LBI.
The ‘robbers’ were said to have fired several shots into the policeman’s vehicle.
The rank has said that he recovered his gold band and chain from one of the robbers, who was held at the scene.
