A clerk, attached to John Fernandes Limited, stands accused of causing the death of a labourer who was struck while clearing debris from the Peter’s Hall Public road.
The clerk was yesterday charged and released on $400,000 bail for the offence.
Oscar Stull, 24, of 675 Perseverance, East Bank Demerara, denied the charge, which alleged that on December 10, last, at Peter’s Hall Public Road, East Bank Demerara, he drove motorcar PWW 9187 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Quason Lewis.
He appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. Attorney-at-law Patrice Henry, who asked the court to grant his client bail in a reasonable amount, represented Stull.
The lawyer argued that if bail is granted to his client, he would return to court for the trial, citing that he fully cooperated with the police investigation.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day in question, around 22:15 hrs, Stull was proceeding on the eastern carriageway of the Peter’s Hall Public Road at a fast rate, when he lost control of the vehicle and swerved right. As a result, the front right side of his vehicle collided with Lewis who fell to the roadway. The injured man was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he died while receiving treatment.
It was reported that at the time of the accident, Lewis along with his colleagues, who are all attached to a private waste management company, were cleaning debris along the median on the eastern carriageway of the road.
While the Prosecutor was not opposed to bail being granted to Stull, he asked that it be in a substantial amount and that conditions be attached.
The Magistrate granted Stull bail in the sum of $400,000. Conditions of the bail are that he report every Friday to the officer in charge at the Providence Police Station until the completion and determination of the trial. His licence was also suspended until the completion of the trial.
