Tonight the semifinals of this year’s Upper Demerara Football Association’s GT Beer football championship are on at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground when Haynes and Lewis Winners Connection face Net Rockers at 19.00hrs and Botafago clash with Eagles United from 21.00hrs.
In the final group matches played on Boxing Night, Eagles United qualified with a higher goal difference over Capital GFC when they outscored Hi Stars 6-3. That result compared with the 3-0 by Capital FC over Hi Stars gave the Eagles side a higher number of goals scored after they and Capital FC played to a 0-0 draw in their group of three play.
So by virtue of that Eagles now face Botafago in the second game from 21:00hrs. Botafago defeated Topp XX 2-1 in their game also on Boxing Night to make it to the final four as Donovan Francis got both goals for them and Keon Hall netted the other for Topp XX.
And their game against Haynes and Lewis Winners Connection in the first game tonight is one that will be keenly contested.
Winners Connection having won this tournament before will have the experience against the number two ranked club Net Rockers who have shown good from in this tournament and were unbeaten in the last league championship.
So how the Winners Connection will fare is left to be seen.
Eagles with guest player Sheldron Holder who got the hat-trick in that 6-3 win and a double from Colywn Drakes, while the other was by Randolph Lewis would be pleased with their scoring ability but their defending has left hopes that they can be beaten. James Trotman who got the first goal and the other two by Tony Adams showed the way to get the ball into the back of the net against this Eagles side.
But Botafago have a good forward line with the Jamal Haynes and Donovan Francis leading their charge.
Net Rockers have shown great form since the league where they played unbeaten and now can make the move to get this prestigious title with a win over the former champions Winners Connection.
But it all boils down to who wants it more and tonight we will be known when these two matches are played under floodlights at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
