Fifteen-year-old Samuel Ince-Carvalhal has set his feet firmly on the path to follow in the footsteps of his Grandfather and National Squash Coach Carl Ince as he aims to realise his dreams of becoming a fully qualified International Squash Coach.
Samuels’s recent achievement of gaining Level 2 Coaching certification has spurred him on to begin the arduous task of preparing himself for the next level which is level 3 certification.
Undoubtedly, this will be a lengthy journey as the level 3 qualification is advanced and requires grading from a panel of level 4 coaches for certification.
This means that Samuel will have to travel to the United Kingdom to complete this course but his training is underway for him to achieve this over the next couple of years.
Ranked number 2 in Guyana and 3rd in the Caribbean in his age category, Samuel migrated from the UK 4 years ago and lived his first year in Guyana on his grandfather’s farm at Loo Creek on the Linden Highway where Squash Camps are held for members of the various Guyana Squash teams. A third Court, with a glass front is presently under construction.
A great start to his squash development was having easy access to his own Squash Courts and the availability of an elite Coach at hand but this optimum situation had to change when academic requirements forced a move to Georgetown.
Now he only gets to stay with his Grandparents during holidays and some weekends but tries to make the most of his limited time there.
He has already put his coaching skills to good use as he helps with the Junior Programme at the Georgetown Club on Saturday Mornings.
He is also co-organiser of squash camps held at Coach Ince’s residence and assists during coaching sessions.
His first student is his younger sibling Solomon, who has decided to give the sport a more serious try next year.
“I am pleased with the character building that Samuel’s volunteering and coaching brings and I am proud of my grandson’s achievement and development,” said Coach Ince.
Having the National Coach as his Grandad comes with many positives but it also comes with high expectations from others; something Samuel is very aware of.
“I am very grateful to have such an experienced and competent Coach and even greater grand dad behind me and the pressure of high expectations from others is worth it,” said the young Samuel.
Going into 2019 with a determined spirit for playing and coaching, Samuel is hoping to accelerate his development over the next six months to raise his ranking at Junior CASA which will be hosted by Trinidad in July.
