In our multi-cultural, multi-religious society it is common for Guyanese to participate in the festivities associated with religions other than their own. Undoubtedly, the best example of this is the Christian Christmas celebration. Hindus, Muslims and Christians all directly participate in many of the benefits associated with Christmas.
Merchants of all religions and no religion look forward to a traditional boom in economic activity at Christmas time. Purchases of food, clothing, household appliances, toys and gifts are a feature of every Guyanese Christmas. The sale of alcohol skyrockets and unfortunately so does the incidence of road accidents and road fatalities.
Much of the festivity trickles into the New Year celebrations and at the end of the first week in January, merchants are laughing all the way to the bank and consumers are asking where did my money go? Fortunately, there is still a section of the Guyana population that understands and remembers the reason for the season and what the Christmas festival is all about.
No serious person claims that Jesus was born on December 25, but the overwhelming percentage of the world’s population knows that Jesus was born. Celebrating his birth on any other day would have no less or no greater significance than celebrating it on December 25.
Our scientifically defended Bible tells us all we need to know about Jesus Christ and because unlike the founders of other religions, Jesus is alive, He makes Himself available to individually tell us all that we need to know about Himself.
His birth was only one part of a divine universal plan. Equally important was His crucifixion, resurrection and His ascension, and Christians look forward to His return.
This year we get to celebrate the birthday of the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords and of someone who loves us more than anyone else can. Whether you think of Him as baby Jesus or the conquering Lion of the tribe of Judah on His birthday this year, let us all give Him a gift that is acceptable to Him, and the only gift that we can give that means anything to Him is the gift of ourselves – our will, our mind, our emotions and our spirit.
Have a happy, merry, Christ-centred Christmas and may all the after-effects be pleasant!
