Continuing their recent run of a top brand of football, Net Rockers showed that their recent form remains intact with a comprehensible 5-1 whipping of Blueberry Hill to vault into the semifinals as Haynes’ Winners Connection got the better of Topp XX to also move on to the final four stages of this year’s Upper Demerara Football Association’s sixth annual GT Beer championship Friday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
From as early as the 2nd minute they scored to stamp their intentions after Hussain Cumberbatch would nail home the first goal from a flank play; and goal number two he got this time in the 21st minute to send his side 2-0 up.
Blueberry Hill tried their best to counter but were unsuccessful as Shane Luckie headed in goal number three for the Rockers in the 37thminute with no reply from the Blueberry Hill side.
The pressure remained in this half as the fourth goal for Net Rockers would come from the forward Denzil Pryce who combined with Cumberbatch before tucking in a 4-0 lead in the 40th minute and look comfortable when the half time whistle was sounded.
Blueberry Hill managed to cut that lead through Royston Fraser as the defenders lost concentration in the Rockers camp but Shane Luckie would get his second goal in the 70th minute after he was sent to the ground in the 18 yard box and the penalty taken by him sent the Rockers up 5-1 which they maintained to the end of this game.
Game one that evening ended with victory for Winners Connection who first got the lead when an inadvertent play from the defending team had the ball hitting the arm of their player, which was deemed to be on purpose and the penalty awarded against them (Topp XX) was scored by winners’ Arnold David in the 27th minute.
But Topp XX tried to even things and they were rewarded when Newil Murphy netted in the 39th minute for the Topp XX boys who held the game up 1-1 when the first session ended.
However, the Winners Connection would get the deciding goal in that game which came five minutes after play resumed.
Winners Connection’s Carlos Grant had a close up shot to score in the 50th minute and give his team a 2-1 lead which they never relinquished even though Topp XX were unlucky not to get two goals in the second half.
They were, however, consoled by the fact they were the second best team in the group play to get another chance and now when they face Botafago the defending champions in the final group play matches on Boxing Night at the tournament venue, the MSC ground.
Eagles United and Hi Stars will play the second game of that double header next Wednesday.
