Trinidad and Tobago’s (T&T) Shiva’s boys’ Hindu College edged Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School (CWSS) 2-1 on Saturday night to clinch the inaugural KFC Goodwill Cup with a perfect record after three rounds of play at the Ministry of Education (MoE) ground on Carifesta Avenue.

This tournament, the first of its kind in Guyana during recent years, was the brainchild of the Petra Organisation (football Promotions Company) and it saw Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers league champions; Annandale Secondary along with CWSS and Region nine’s Annai Secondary locked in a four-way round-robin battle with T&T’s 2016 league champions; Shiva’s boys for the KFC Cup.
Heading into Saturday night’s play, Annai had a chance at the title but they needed to beat Annandale by at least two goals and hope CWSS could have found their swagger to defeat the T&T school team in the night’s feature game.
The first part of the mission was completed when Annai thrashed Annandale 6-0 in the opening contest with the first two strikes being own goals, while Niazz Mohammed (the tournament leading goal scorer) added a brace in the 28th and 55th minutes before Junior Rodrigues (68th) and Naidison Daniels (80th) padded the final score.
In the final game of the event, Stevon Thomas found the back of the net in 31st minute to ensure that CWSS would’ve had to score at least two goals to see them lose their grip of the title and 15 minutes into the second half, Tyrese Lewis equaliser for the lads from the ‘mining town’. Nine minutes from stoppage time, the game could’ve gone in any direction after being deadlocked for 21 minutes but Shiva’s boys’ Gesiah Bishop put all doubts to rest and banged in the winning goal for the visitors.
The event which kicked off on the 15th of this month saw Shiva’s boys’ college beating Annai 3-0 on the opening round before squeezing past both East Coast’s Annandale and Linden’s CWSS 2-1.
Reigning school league champions, Annandale finished the tournament in a disappointing last place after failing to win each of their three matches, while South Rupununi will be proud of Annai that finished second, while CWSS were third after picking up two points from an extra-time win against Annandale.
Annai’s Leston Smith was adjudged best goal keeper while Nikel Rawlings, Captain of the champions, was awarded MVP of the competition.
Co-director of the Petra Organisation, Troy Mendonca, noted that he was pleased with the success that the event brought and he pledged that his organisation remains committed to the development of the sport at the grassroots level.
Mendonca hinted that next year’s edition of the tournament may see the inclusion of other overseas based school teams with the possibility of a Surinamese side a definite possibility. (Calvin Chapman)
