The Guyana Police Force is advising citizens of Guyana to be extra cautious in the orchestration of their Christmas duties, especially in the aspects of travelling and shopping.
In a social media post the Force made several crime tips available to the public, including spotting suspicious behaviour, ATM safety, jogging safety, safety at night for students, public transportation safety, residence safety and security and safety for taxi drivers.
The Force advised that the public be aware of unusual noises such as gunshots, screaming, barking dogs and/or sounds of fighting.
Citizens were also advised to be observant of persons attempting to enter a residence or vehicle improperly, one or more persons loitering in parked vehicles along with body language that suggests the person or people are being watched.
Residents are advised to “always” lock their doors, even during short naps or when they are just down the hall, keep items such as cheque books, wallets, cash, jewellery etc. out of sight. They were also warned against keeping large amounts of cash in their houses or on their person.
In the aspect of transportation, it was advised that taxi drivers be alert and aware, not to display money and pay keen attention to passengers and the directions that they give. They were advised to “greet and maintain eye contact with passengers when picking them up and to be careful with suspicious passengers and those sitting directly behind them.
The drivers were also warned against driving in alleys and back lanes.
In the area of public transportation, the consumers were also apprised to be alert of their surroundings and to try as much as possible to maintain schedules that ensure that a lot of people are at the bus or car parks.
The consumers were asked to look for pickpockets and loud distractions they may use and if they are approached or bothered by someone to ask them “loudly” to leave them alone and to move to a next area.
For persons travelling, the police advise that they avoid publicizing their plans and ensure that they secure or remove valuables their homes, along with safely securing their homes and if possible ask neighbours to look over their homes.
Finally, for persons carrying out ATM transactions, it was asked that they maintain the ordinary rules of the transaction and to avoid doing business in the night and to use busy, public places.
