Charrandass’ action in Guyana’s parliament yesterday, reminds me of that childhood game of ‘the dog and the bone’, and the news of him leaving the country is also of no surprise to me. It is sad that many of our people, who claim to love Guyana, will vote in favour of politicians who look like them, but after those politicians win, these very people who support them will leave for America and Canada.
A friend of mine from Trinidad will often use this phrase, “Playing smart with stupidness.” This is what I believe took place in the parliament of Guyana. Though Charrandass actions are applauded by some, and considered democratic, it may only serve to add wood to the fire of racial politics in Guyana. The man from East Berbice speaks of voting conscience, but it somehow things do not add up. He took the bone and ran.
Nevertheless, the sufferings of Afro Guyanese under the PPP/C, will not be forgotten by the common man in the street just like that. There are still too many loose threads hanging concerning the manipulation of justice, and the abuse of the same under this party. The PPP/C supporters may not care about those killed by death squads under this party’s term in office or the large amount of money stolen and squandered, but a large percentage of the Guyanese people want justice.
Some may see Charrandass’ action as their ‘get out of jail free’ card, and a chance to be in government again. However, they are those who will never forget, and there are those who will not rest until justice is served. There is no democracy when those who serve as leaders, pocket the nation’s wealth, and murder its citizens, and are allowed to walk free.
Come election in 3 months, Guyanese must stand up against those who promote racial politics, and those whose hands are red with the blood of our youths, who were stereotyped and killed by the then PPP/C government dead squads. Guyanese must not allow the cries of the blood from the ground of those murdered to go unanswered.
