A 39-year-old woman, who allegedly bribed a clearance officer to not put a previous conviction her brother had on his clearance document, was yesterday arraigned before a City Magistrate.
Bibi Azimulla of New Area, East Berbice, Corentyne, appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on November 19, last, at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, Azimulla tried to corrupt Leslyn Halley-Smith, an agent of the State by paying her $20,000 to not put on a clearance document, a previous conviction her brother, Azaad Azimulla had.
An unrepresented Azimulla denied the charge after it was read to her.
Facts presented by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh stated that on November 19, last, Azimulla went into the clearance office at the Criminal Investigation Department and offered the clearance officer the sum of money.
Azimulla was then told of the offence, arrested and taken into custody.
Magistrate Daly after listening to the Prosecutor facts granted the woman bail in the sum of $50,000.
The mother of two was instructed to make her next court appearance on January 2, 2019.
