The attitude of some nurses, doctors, as well as other significant health care personnel, to patients in public health facilities within Guyana, has long since been a matter of concern for the country’s populace. In fact, poor attitude has been pegged as a major issue within the public health fraternity. It poses not only as a risk to the way in which society views public health facilities, but also further endangers the lives of patients.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Retired Brigadier George Lewis, in recognizing this, has decried the above mentioned behaviour of these healthcare personnel towards patients, and further stated that mechanisms are being put in place to curb the unacceptable behaviour.
“The behaviour of not only nurses but of healthcare workers in general has not been one that is acceptable.”
Lewis stressed that while many health care workers may have negative attitudes towards the patients, it does not negate the fact that there are also committed health care givers who should be lauded within the system. Recognizing that these few persons with questionable attitudes towards patients may be held culpable for the perception of the hospital, Lewis stated that training programmes are being put in place for all immediate health care workers.
“In every barrel there might be one or two bad apples and we are working to address that,” he said.
Nonetheless, GPHC does not expect the changes among these healthcare providers to take effect overnight. A period has been allotted, starting from the time of training, to assess its effects in the changing of attitudes towards patients. Lewis elucidated that the training of healthcare workers has begun and is expected to produce a reduction of complaints from patients.
“Through training, we are looking at letting the persons understand what the acceptable behaviour is and what we expect from them. And we think that by providing training, it will help to alleviate the situation.”
It was noted that the training of healthcare personnel will be tackled both within and outside of the system, with customer service training being done locally at the GPHC, and in some cases facilitators will be brought from outside of the Hospital.
Furthermore, a number of other programmes are ongoing at the Accident and Emergency Department. These programmes are working in tandem with Vanderbilt University in the United States, created within the pretext of helping Emergency nurses when it comes to professionalism, behaviour, attitude, knowledge, etc.
