A detective sergeant is reportedly under close arrest for allegedly destroying evidence which appeared to suggest that an assistant superintendent of police may have lied about the circumstances under which he was relieved of his firearm and jewellery.
The ASP has alleged that two men attacked him on Monday night at La Bonne Intention (LBI).
The senior rank claimed that he was relieved of his licenced 9mm pistol, gold chain and a gold band.
It was claimed that the men also shot at the policeman’s vehicle, which bore several bullet holes.
The rank is said to have held onto one of the robber. With assistance from persons in the area, he allegedly overpowered the robber, who still had the jewellery.
Police had stated on Tuesday that both suspects were in custody and the policeman’s firearm was retrieved.
Kaieteur News understands that while being questioned yesterday, one of the suspects alleged that the senior rank was engaged in a corrupt transaction when he was attacked and his vehicle shot at.
It is alleged that a detective sergeant who was grilling the suspect destroyed the man’s statement, reportedly out of concern for his senior colleague.
The suspect allegedly relayed this information to other ranks. According to a source, ranks from the Police Major Crimes Unit joined the investigation.
The detective sergeant was subsequently placed under close arrest at the Tactical Service Unit.
Contacted last night, Crime Chief Lyndon Alves said that he was unaware of the incident.
