Christmas for many has been embraced as a season centered on receiving rather than giving, even with little gestures of kindness. Christmas, for children, especially those less privileged, has been redefined through the spirit of contentment. The Stabroek Georgetown Lion’s Club in spreading cheer in this Christmas season and targeted some 150 children from Leopold Street, Georgetown.
Yesterday, the children were treated to snacks and gifts from the humanitarian group.
The venture began some 16 years ago, and is just one of the Club’s many outreaches. According to the Club’s Secretary, Nalini Barker, the group’s meetings are usually kept at the Saint Stanislaus College and as such, they are au fait with the struggles of neighbouring areas such as Leopold Street. Children were treated to gifts, snacks as well as the jollification of meeting Santa Claus.
The organization has also hosted a plethora of both medical and social outreaches for the year, with a medical outreach earlier this year within the Stabroek vicinity being just one. The group is also known for its outreaches for homeless persons in Georgetown.
Lions clubs within Guyana as well as the Diaspora are geared in empowering volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace and promote international understanding.
The Stabroek Georgetown Lion’s Club gift-sharing venture was spearheaded by the Club’s President Haroon Hallim, as well as the other members.
