Western Tigers and Fruta Conquerors have both booked their quarter-finals places in the 2018/19 edition of the Guyana Football Federation/Stag Super 16 championship following contrasting wins last night at the GFC ground in the City.
The feature match saw a lethargic display by Western Tigers which somehow was still good enough for them to get past the Guyana Police Force Football Club by the lone goal of that encounter which came via the penalty route in the second half compliments of Pernel Schultz.
Last evening’s opening match saw Fruta Conquerors sending a strong message to all that they are aiming for the double, having already taken the GFF Elite League championship when they brushed aside the Berbice Select side 6-0 led by a hat-trick from former Grove Hi Tech player, Domini Garnett.
Garnett, who was the leading marksman for Grove hi Tech which had downed some of the big guns in last year’s edition of the year-end tournament but now a member of the Elite League champions, did not waste too much time in putting his stamp on this year’s competition as well.
On seven minutes he sent Conquerors into the lead which was doubled ten minutes later when he again tapped past the Ancient County’s custodian Tierre Phillips. Conquerors were in total control of proceedings against a side that clearly showed they were lacking leg hours.
Garnett’s strike partner Eon Alleyne inked his name on the score sheet in the 20th minute to increase the advantage for the Tucville based side. Garnett achieved his hat-trick in the 30th minute which meant that team’s passage to the quarter-finals was virtually sealed.
The second half saw somewhat of a more robust effort from the Berbicians but it was still not going to be enough to keep the Fruta Boys at bay. Two more unanswered goals were recorded with second half substitutes Jermain Junior and Rushawn Ritch adding their names to the score sheet in the 64th and 87th minutes, respectively to seal a comfortable 6-0 win for Conquerors who will now await the winner of the Upper Demerara derby on December 23rd between Milerock and Eagles.
The main event was anticipated to be a fierce clash but it turned out to be an ordinary clash with Western Tigers lucky to still walk away victors after missing at least 10 goals much to the dismay of their supporters and other fans at the venue.
Chief culprit on the night was national Under-20 player Kelsey Benjamin who just couldn’t get it right. It took the efforts of Benjamin’s teammate Pernel Schultz who buried a penalty in the 58th minute to seal victory.
Schultz himself was brought down in the box and took the shot himself which he placed to the left of Police custodian Roncy Caleb. Police did create some chances of their own but the Tigers dominated proceedings and the score-line should have been much more attractive to the eye but in the end, the lone goal was good enough to take them over the line and into the final eight.
They will now face the winner of Friday’s clash between Ann’s Grove and Soesdyke Falcons in the first match on Christmas Day at the Golden Grove Ground.
