A Guyana-born Math and Science teacher, living in Brampton, Canada, has developed a board game that has been generating a buzz.
Targeting especially students, MATH OPS pushes them to answer math questions in a game that is not too dissimilar from the all-popular Monopoly, which is a must-have for millions of families across the globe.
According to the developer, Clyde Pestano, 48, the project took almost 18 months with a website complete and the games expected to start selling in Guyana soon.
“It will cost about $8,000. As you are aware, our work at the schools here in Canada is not much different from Guyana. We have carefully designed the game that it will be ideal for the Grade Six pupils (Common Entrance).”
However, the game will be sold in three versions catering for three age groups- 6-8; 9-11 and 12-plus.
Pestano explained that as an educator, he has always been seeking ways to making it easier on his students.
“You have to make it fun. What other than playing a game that is enjoyed and is educational at the same time?”
Each game has over 300 questions and comes double side.
Formerly from Corentyne, Berbice, Pestano, a father of three, left Guyana in 2004.
The game itself could cause players to land in the “Principal’s Office”, earning detention. Landing on other spots could see them answering geometry questions.
“We have included normal things that comes with Maths, including geometry, measurements, data management and strands,” the teacher explained.
Already, a local distributor has indicated strong interest in making the game available to the market here.
“We are hoping that the Ministry of Education and the private schools see this as a critical tool and similar initiatives on other subjects become a reality. As mentioned before, teachers constantly seek simpler, fun ways to impart knowledge.”
MATH OPS will be available by purchasing online at www.math-ops.com and soon will be distributed locally.
