President Granger’s creation of the Local Government Commission appears to have caught a big rotten fish in the form of one particular individual at the Mayor and City Council.
However, the President has reminded us that it is the duty of the Courts to determine the guilt of all accused persons, including that individual.
On the other hand, the evidence uncovered by Inquiry Commissioner Justice Cecil Kennard unquestionably associates this accused official with extensive criminal corruption for which Guyanese expect him to be held accountable.
From the perspective of good governance, the President and his administration score full marks for effort, and will doubtlessly pursue the prosecution this person to the full extent of the law. President Granger’s approach to corruption stands in stark contrast to that of former President Ramotar, who, under pressure, commissioned the creation of SOCU with enough legal loopholes in its operational guidelines that were used to facilitate criminally accused members of his Government effectively escaping the noose of the law.
Public morality has been offended by the fact that suspected and accused corrupt persons under the previous administration have eluded justice. So far President Granger’s administration has demonstrated its commitment to rooting out corruption in the public domain, regardless of political party affiliation of the perpetrators. This is the only way that Guyanese and the international community can regain confidence in our Governmental institutions that are essential to the greatness of Guyana.
