Test batsman Vishaul Singh registered his second half-century of the season and 14th at this level with a carefully constructed unbeaten 68, while Chris Barnwell fell four short of his tenth fifty as Guyana Jaguars ended the second day of their second round Regional four-day encounter against Leewards Volcanoes yesterday at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound Antigua with a lead of 33 with five wickets in hand.
Resuming the day on 36-2 replying to the 182 made by the Volcanoes and the 29-year-old Singh, who played the last of his three Tests in May last year, was still there at the end of the day after facing 157 balls and reaching the ropes seven times with Jaguars on 215-5.
The GCC left hander shared two half-century stands after he came to crease when night watchman Clinton Pestano, who reached the ropes four times in his 44 ball 25, was bowled by burly off-spinner Rakeem Cornwall at 70-3.
Singh first added 58 from 156 balls with Tagenarine Chanderpaul in a partnership that was as exciting as watching paint dry.
While the son of former Test batsman the illustrious Dr. Shivnarine Chanderpaul struggled to get the ball off the square and contributed 10 runs from 73 balls, Singh added 42 to stand.
With the score on 128 Damion Jacobs ended Chanderpaul’s turtle paced innings when he trapped the left-hander LBW for 29 with two boundaries from 156 balls which included 137 dot balls.
Singh then added 69 with Barnwell who scored 46 of those runs to give the Jaguars a lead but with the total on 197, Barnwell who hit three fours and the day’s only six in his 61-balls innings was removed by the lively Elvin Berridge.
Singh continued to bat responsibly and along with Anthony Bramble who is unbeaten on 11 saw the Jaguars safely to the close.
Cornwall has taken 2-39 from 19 frugal overs, while Jacobs and Berridge have taken a wicket each.
