Guyana made proud at 2018 CXC Regional Awards ceremony
In addition to Queen’s College receiving the 2018 Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination [CAPE] School of the Year award, four Guyanese students were among the outstanding performers who were duly awarded when the Caribbean Examinations Council [CXC] held its Regional Top Awards Ceremony last week Thursday in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Receiving the award for the most outstanding Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate [CSEC] candidate in the Sciences was Daniel Baldeo-Thorne of Queen’s College, Guyana. He had 13 Grade Ones and two Grade Twos.
Also copping top awards were: Rebekah Persaud of St. Rose’s High School and Salma Majeed of ISA Islamic School, who claimed awards for Most Outstanding CSEC Candidate in Business Education with 9 Grade Ones, 2 Grade Twos and one Grade three and for the Most Outstanding CSEC Candidate in Humanities with 18 Grade Ones, respectively.
Claiming top awards for this year’s sitting of CAPE was Aadilah Ali of Queen’s College, who was the 2018 winner of the Dennis Irvine Award. The award is the symbol of academic excellence at the CAPE level.
Ali achieved Grade Ones in 14 Units and Grade Two in 1 Unit. She is the second Queen’s College student to win the Dennis Irvine Award, following Cecil Cox in 2015. She also copped the award for Most Outstanding Candidate in Natural Sciences.
Guyanese students were among the top performers at the 2018 CXC Regional Awards Ceremony.
Another student from Queen’s College took the award for Most Outstanding Candidate in Mathematics. Rajiv Muneshwer achieved Grade Ones in 12 CAPE Units. Muneshwer also received the RM Results CAPE Mathematics Award. RM Results, a UK-based company, began sponsoring the award in 2017.
The award ceremony saw 17 of the region’s top CXC students hailing from Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda and Grenada, being recognized and awarded for their outstanding performances.
Receiving the award for being the most outstanding candidate overall at CSEC this year was Keondre Herbert of the St Joseph’s Academy in Antigua and Barbuda. Herbert achieved Grade One passes in 20 subjects. It was Kae-Shanae Virgo of Montego Bay High School, Jamaica, who won the Best Short Story award in the English ‘A’ examination with a story entitled “Betrayal.” Two other Jamaican students copped the Visual Arts awards. Okeen Wallace of St. George’s College walked away with the Best 3-Dimensional Visual Arts Award with a piece from the Sculpture and Ceramics Option entitled “The Forest”, while Danielle Gennard of Wolmers Girls’ School copped the award for the Best 2-Dimensional Visual Arts work with her creation entitled “Deal with the devil” from the Painting and Mixed Media Option.
The CSEC School of the year award went to St Joseph’s Academy of Antigua and Barbuda.
Vincentians Ryanna Glynn, a student of the Girls’ High School and Nicholi John, a student of St. Vincent Grammar School, were recognised by CXC and the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants [ACCA] for their performance in Principles of Accounts [CSEC].
Among the CAPE awardees were a number of Trinidadian students. Mikhaili Toney of Presentation College, San Fernando, took the award for the Most Outstanding Candidate in Humanities. He will receive the Hodder Education CAPE Humanities Award. Kirese Narinesingh of Naparima Girls’ College took the award Most Outstanding Candidate in Language Studies with Grade One in eight Units. Seline Sundar of Lakshmi Girls’ Hindu College continued that school’s dominance of regional business awards achieving Grade Ones in eight CAPE Units. Sundar will receive the ACCA CXC Business Studies Award 2018, it is the second time that the award will be presented.
A student from St. Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain, Jade Lakhan, secured the award for Most Outstanding Candidate in Environmental Science. Lakhan achieved Grade Ones in eight CAPE Units.
At the ceremony too, the Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence [CCSLC] top awardees for 2018 were Daria James [most outstanding female] of the Washington Archibald High School, St. Kitts and Nevis, while Christian Meneses-Chow Chung of the Presentation Brothers College, Grenada, was named the most outstanding CCSLC male student.
The event heard addresses from St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves; its Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education, National Reconciliation and Information, Morine Williams; Ministry of Education Jimmy Prince; Registrar Caribbean Examinations Council, Glenroy Cumberbatch, and Chairman of the Caribbean Examinations Council, Sir Hilary Beckles.
