Detective Sergeant Keith Conway, the rank that the Guyana Police Force said solved many crimes, including murders, and saw much success in apprehension of wanted persons, and dismantling of criminal gangs among other achievements, was yesterday awarded ‘A’ Division’s much coveted “Best Cop” award. He was presented with a trophy, monetary incentives, gifts and vacation trips to Kaieteur Falls and Arrowpoint Nature Resort from stakeholders, and also the Guyana Police Force.

“I’ve worked hard. I was very disciplined and dedicated. I was very consistent with my work. Coming from Berbice to Georgetown and to accomplish the best performer of the year is a great accomplishment for me,” Conway said.
2017 “Best Cop” Sergeant Gavin Boyce, who is one of the most outstanding Traffic ranks with over 1,000 cases so far for this year, was this year’s runner up, and also received a trophy, incentives and gifts among other prizes for his outstanding work.
The ceremony, which is held every year with the intent of giving back to ranks who have worked
exceptionally well and beyond the call of duty, was held in the compound of the Brickdam Police Station, and was also an opportunity for junior ranks to dine with the Commissioner and Senior Officers.
Among those present at this year’s occasion were Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, Commissioner of Police Mr. Leslie James, his four deputies, most if not all the Force’s top brass, and a number of individuals from the private sector.
In delivering remarks for the Division’s review for the year, Commander Marlon Chapman commended all his ranks who overcame numerous challenges to present tangible results. He also noted that the Division has made significant strides in reducing serious crimes by 18% and also seized 50 illegal firearms.
Chapman also stated that two of the most significant successes for the Division for the year were the dismantling of the carjacking ring and the apprehension of persons who trailed and robbed persons leaving commercial banks.
Commissioner James in his address to the ranks disclosed that, “We are working with our consultants to roll out a reformation plan, and I can assure you all that within the first quarter of next year, you will see a much-reformed Guyana Police Force,”.
The Top Cop also urged the ranks to be careful on the roadways and to look at themselves and take a different approach.
“Be careful on the roadways, do not drink and drive. If you are drinking, please have a designated driver.”
A stern warning was also given to drivers involved in accidents – be it minor, serious or fatal – who leave the accident scenes without rendering assistance or reporting same. The Commissioner cautioned that persons who are found culpable of not doing what the law requires, will be found and prosecuted.
