As play in the Upper Demerara Football Association/GT Beer championship continued, Silver Shattas kept their chances of reaching the final four alive by turning back the challenge of Blueberry Hill United handing them their first loss while Winners Connection jump started their campaign with a 2-1 victory against Amelia’s Ward Panthers on Wednesday night last at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
Playing in the Group Three draw of the tournament, Winners Connection got their first goal from Marley Davidson in the 21st minute. But the Panthers, ranked at three above the Winners Connection would equalise through Akeem Caesar in the 33rd minute.
But Winners Connection struck again, this time through Jevon Figuiera in the 56th minute, it turned out to be the winning goal. In the Group Two encounter, a Jonah Simon header was the start of a good recovery by Silver Shattas which had lost their opening game against Net Rockers and the other from Randy Pickering ensured they defeated Blueberry Hill 2-1 watched by a fair sized crowd.
Royston Fraser had evened things up for Blueberry Hill when he scored in the 45th minute. It means that Blueberry Hill must now win their next game against Net Rockers. That’s if they want to have any real chance of going past this stage of the tournament which would be an uphill task as the second ranked Rockers are on a roll having taken care of Shattas by a 4-0 margin in their first game.
On Sunday, Capital FC will face Hi Stars and Topp XX oppose Amelia’s Ward Panthers in what will be crucial encounters as teams vie for slots in the final four of this competition.
