With the collapse of one of the basketball boards at Mackenzie Sports Club in Linden last month, playing of the sport in the Bauxite Mining Town has been curtailed as a result.
As a result of this set back, President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) visited Linden last weekend cognizant that Linden remains a force at the national level, producing several of the nation’s best players over the years.
A concerned Hinds during the course of his stay had a first- hand look at the shattered basketball goal at the MSC Hard Court and held discussions with the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) including President Lawrence Simon and a representative team from the Mackenzie Sports Club which was led its President, Avery Trim.

Hinds concluded: “With basketball being one of the sports that has enhanced and provided an opportunity to the youths in Linden it is vital that they get a replacement. We are aware that there are two basketball goals in very good condition that have been dormant at the National Gymnasium but these goals were taken from the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall after new ones were bought in 2016. So it would be good if the National Sports Commission that falls under the Ministry of Social Cohesion acts on the request made by the LABA.”
He further asserted: “As we all know sports is a big part of providing recreation providing discipline, having a sense of team orientation and building networks. So we know, and I am speaking as an executive of the GABF that having the Lindeners access to a place where they can hold their tournaments, it could only be beneficial.”
LABA has on its agenda the Wayne Andries Memorial tournament which was scheduled to be held this month as well as an Under-21 tournament; but both are on hold as a result of the damaged goal.
Hinds, a former national power forward also pointed out: “That is why we feel if the administration act quickly and responds positively we can get the goals here in Linden, almost immediately, so I am appealing on behalf of LABA and as the President of the GABF for the NSC to assign, not give away to the Mackenzie Sports Club; to assign the basketball goals to the MSC so that basketball can once again be played in Linden.”
