Fire, suspected to be of electric origin, destroyed the Overwinning Village, East Bank Berbice home of 67-year-old Hasmoon Mohamed yesterday afternoon.
Mohamed told reporters that the fire began around 14:00 hrs while she was in the bottom flat chatting with her seven-year-old grandson. She lived at the premises with the grandson and her 39-year-old daughter.
According to Mohamed, “me and me grandson was downstairs with a friend and we gaffing. Then me go bathe and me hearing something cracking and me seeing dust. So me calling on me grandson and he na answer. All me hear is ‘Fire! Fire!’ neighbours hollering.”
She recounted that she noticed all her electrical outlets were sparking. She believes it was electrical in origin. Mohamed told Kaieteur News that she lost millions of dollars in the fire since the entire upper flat of the concrete building, which included three bedrooms, and the bottom flat, which housed a bedroom and kitchen were gutted. The house was fully furnished.
Residents stated that the fire service was prompt but the crew was unable to save much of the house and the woman’s valuables.
They were however able to contain the fire from spreading to other buildings.
