Guyana Jaguars began their campaign for a 12th Regional First-Class title and fifth in a row with a 126 runs win over the Windwards Volcanoes at the Darren Sammy Cricket Stadium in St. Lucia in the first round of the 2018/2019 season.
Jaguars made 224 in their first innings with Test batsman Vishaul Singh 75 and all-rounder Romario Shepherd 44 doing the bulk of the scoring.
Volcanoes replied with 187 as Clinton Pestano (4-46) got support from Veerasammy Permaul (3-2) before Jaguars, batting a second time declared on 310-4.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul top scored with an ultra-cautious unbeaten 84 with just three boundaries from 334 balls with 271 of them not scored from. Clinton Pestano 69, Chris Barnwell 61 not out and Leon Johnson 51 also got half centuries but none of them converted their scores into three-figures.
“The batters are now getting into their grove. We need them to go on and get big scores. I would like our batters to put a price on their wicket,” said the 36-year-old Jaguars Head Coach Esuan Crandon.
Hurricanes set 348 to win, fell for 222 as Permaul (3-56) and Shepherd, Barnwell and Pestano had two wickets each.
“The bowlers hit some good areas on the pitch created pressure and were very aggressive, but I would like them to be more patient and consistent,” added the Berbician with 90 wickets from 38 First-Class games from 2001 to 2011.
“I thought we played some good all round cricket. It was our first game of the season and we won it quite convincingly. I was most satisfied with the way the guys fought throughout the game. They displayed great character during difficult periods and when we were in trouble during the first innings we saw a few fighting efforts to get us to a respectable total,” said Guyana’s most successful First-Class Coach.
Crandon said he was pleased with the way the guys fought throughout the game.
“They displayed great character during difficult periods and when we were in trouble during the first innings we saw a few fighting efforts to get us to a respectable total,” stated Crandon.
Jaguars are on an 11 game unbeaten streak; having not lost a match since the final game of the 2016/17 season when Leewards Hurricanes beat them in St Kitts.
These two teams clash in Antigua from today and Test discard Guyanese Rajendra Chandrika who made four and duck in the opening round a part of the Hurricanes squad.
Johnson, one the batsmen who got to fifty but did not build on that score, improved his Capacity record with the win in St Lucia to 28 wins from 43 games with five losses, a tie and nine draws.
Crandon informed that before the game the support staff would make an assessment of the conditions and what to expect.
“We have to own the conditions. We have to utilize knowledge of the conditions here and make the necessary adjustments during the match,” Crandon explained.
