Kelvin Barker, a driver for Guyana Water Inc (GWI), made an appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore, on a charge of simple larceny that was made out against him.
The charge alleged that Barker on December 3, last, at Festival City Entrance, stole from the person of Andrew Douglas one cell phone valued at $65,000.
The 40 year old South Ruimveldt resident, after pleading to the charge, offered to explain himself. According to Barker, he occasionally drives a taxi when not on duty for the GWI.
He stated that the incident did not occur at the entrance of Festival City but rather, through the street. On the day in question, Douglas jammed Barker’s vehicle damaging his car mirror.
Barker went on to say that Douglas gave him his phone as security, while he went to fix the car mirror. However, Douglas returned with the mirror patched up instead of a new one. Barker stated that he refused to collect the patched mirror and held onto the phone until a new mirror was bought.
Douglas later came with the police and Barker was arrested and taken to the police station where, Barker said he was not given the opportunity to share his side of the story.
Based on the explanation that was provided by Barker, Magistrate Azore entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. Barker was then granted bail in the sum of $10,000 and is to return on January 21, 2019.
