The inaugural Ezon Roberts 5-a-side Memorial Football Fiesta on Sunday evening last was a resounding success with a total of 21 teams at the female, Under-11, 13, 15 and Senior levels taking part.
Organised by the Roberts Family of Kuru Kururu in memory of their son and brother Ezon who passed away at age 37 in December of 2017 as a result of diabetes, the Kuru Kururu Primary School ground was abuzz with action as players from the home club, Swan and Timehri competed against each other.
A team of a Doctor and Nurses from the Kuru Kururu Health Center were also on hand to administer free health checks for sugar and blood pressure; members of the community and players capitalising on the opportunity. Organiser, Dale Roberts, expressed thanks on behalf of his parents, Errol and Norma to the teams and community members for making the event a resounding success.
The Roberts family is promising that the event would be held annually and they strive to ensure that persons keep an active and healthy lifestyle.
When the on-field action ended under lights, the Timehri Panthers Under-11 team took the top two spots in their competition which also featured Kuru Kururu and Swan, while their U13 and 15 sides were equally dominant by lifting the first place trophies and medals.
Kuru Kururu Warriors were runners-up in both the Under13 and 15 to Timehri Panthers; they also received medals.
In the battle of the female stars, Back Street Girls, made up of Ronetta Grant, Ronnesa Grant, Juvena Grant, Shauna Edwards and 10 year-old Aaliyah Boston were too hot for Team Twin Girls comprising of Candac Fraser, Teah Henry, Tamara Henry
and Gwen Alexander to handle and they romped to an exciting 1-0 win to take the trophy and gold medals.
In the senior male competition that attracted some nine teams, FCB of Kuru Kururu emerged winners via a penalty shot out with Swan FC and walked away with $30,000 and a trophy for their efforts.
