East Coast Demerara’s Annandale Secondary School will go down in history as the inaugural champions of the 12-team Guyoil/Tradewind Tankers under-18 football league; a competition that came right down to the wire with the victors being decided after yesterday’s final round of play.
Heading into yesterday’s 11th round of action, Lodge Secondary led the points table with 27 points, ahead of Annandale by a goal difference of nine, while Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School (CWSS); the other team with a genuine title chance, were third with 26 points.
However, the odds were in second place Annandale’s favour to clinch the championship because they had to play Queen’s College (QC), which had only managed two wins in the competition with one of those victories being a walkover, in their final game while Lodge had to face the unbeaten CWSS.
Annandale matched skills with QC yesterday morning during the first game of the final round at the Ministry of Education (MOE) ground on Carifesta Avenue, and made no mistake with a sound 13-2 thrashing of Guyana’s most distinguished Secondary institution with attacking midfielder Omari Glasgow leading the charge with five goals. The result meant that the eventual champions were top of the league and if Lodge were to come away with the championship, they would have needed to beat CWSS by at least a 3-0 margin.
But, in the final match of the day, CWSS remained the only unbeaten team in the tournament after making no mistakes during a comfortable 2-0 victory over Lodge, courtesy of goals from Felix Inniss in the 18th minute and the league’s golden boot winner, Tyrese Lewis (16 goals) in the 51st minute.
That result meant that CWSS leapfrogged Lodge to finish second in the tournament despite being unbeaten but more importantly, securing their spot alongside Annandale in the upcoming KFC Goodwill football tournament, which will be competed on the 15th, 18th and 22nd of this month. Also featuring in the four-team competition will be Annai Secondary School of Region nine and Shiva’s Hindu College of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T).
Following the presentation of the championship trophy, Glasgow who led Annandale goal scoring in the tournament with 15 successful strikes, expressed delight with his team’s success and noted that he couldn’t have done it without the support of his teammates. “Everyone did their part and we are very happy that our hard work has paid off, we will now be looking to the other KFC tournament where we will have an excellent opportunity to challenge the likes of the extremely talented Shiva team from Trinidad,” Glasgow posited to this publication.
The champions will receive $300,000, runners up $200,000, third place $100,000 while fourth place finishers Vergenoegen pocketed $50,000 in the month long league which was also supported by Ansa Mcal through their Icool, Smalta and Lyrix brands.
