The up and coming Balram Narine continued his forward move when he won the Homeline Home Furnishing New Amsterdam Branch first anniversary cycle road race. The winning time was 55 minutes.
Winner Balram Narine receives his trophy as the sponsor organisers and other top cyclists share the moment.
The event, which was organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC), saw Narine of the FACC calling on his reserve to edge out Romello Crawford in what was a two man duel.
The 30 miles event which was open to all Berbice cyclists got underway at 10:00hrs from outside the Homeline New Amsterdam branch at Strand New Amsterdam. The riders then proceeded to Tain University of Guyana Berbice Campus before turning back to finish at its place of origin.
Crawford and Narine were at it from the start and broke away from the bunch at the Canje Bridge and never looked back. It was a ding dong battle between the two top riders both on the up and downward journey as neither cyclist was prepared let up. The duel continued until the end as Narine was able to edge home ahead of Crawford.
Jeremiah Joseph finished third with veteran Syborne Fernandes fourth and Steve Bhimsain fifth.
The juvenile category was won by Joseph with Bhimsain second and Mario Washington third. Joshua Campbell finished first among the U14 riders with Shazim Yacoob second. The top female rider was Maria Carrington.
Some 15 cyclists took part in the race.
At the presentation ceremony that followed, coordinator Randolph Roberts used the opportunity to thank the sponsor for coming on board to do something tangible. He also thanked the police for their assistance given during the event. (Samuel Whyte)
