Four hundred and sixty women across Guyana, in just this year, are now benefitting from the Ministry of Social Protection’s Women Empowerment programme.
This is according to Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally. The programme is geared to empower women economically and socially through the teaching of various skills.
Guyana’s woman demographic currently stands at 380,000, more than half of the country’s populace.
According to Minister Ally, investing in women’s economic empowerment is a direct path towards the achievement of gender equality, poverty eradication and inclusive growth of the economy. Therefore, the Ministry, in holding the empowerment of women as paramount, has embarked on a venture that will ensure financial sustenance for numerous women across Guyana.
She said that the training covers a myriad of aspects, enabling them to realize that their voices are important to decision making processes in the country.
Furthermore, she added that the Ministry’s step to empower women is in accordance with the United Nation’s Development Fund (UNDP) Sustainable Goal Five.
The UNDP in its sustainable development agenda sees gender equality as a core tenet of human rights. UNDP believes that gender inequalities can be eradicated through targeted educational programmes that will take into consideration the experiences, needs and contributions of women in the particular society. The organization stresses the importance of removing structural barriers that once barred women from having a say in decisions that will directly affect their lives.
